Media

There are generally two types of media uploaded to the family tree, being sources and photos. This page provides information about how to name and upload each.

Media folder structure

Media should be stored in the appropriate folder:

Places
Images of houses, buildings and towns
Profile pictures
Headshots to be used as the primary or 'highlighted' image for an individual
Sources
General sources such as certificates, newspaper articles and screenshots of index search results
Tombstones
Photos of graves, tombstones and plaques

Sources

Images which are sources should be named according to the Source Naming Conventions. The image should be uploaded to the sources directory, and an appropriate image type should be selected, for example newspaper or certificate. For screenshots of record repositories, such as birth, marriage and death records, the image type should be electronic.

The source image should be linked directly to the source, and not to the individual or fact because Kiwitrees automatically displays any media items linked to a source alongside the event the source supports. To do this, you will need to edit the source and link the media item after creating the original fact.

Photos of people and places should be attached to facts and events. The reason for this is that media attached directly to an individual will display in the Family Tree slideshow.

Any text found within the original image should be recorded in the text field of the source.

Photos

See this page for instructions on uploading new photos and albums.
